The route: carte talent 'profession artistique et culturelle'
France's talent card for artists does not depend on a fixed list of accepted roles or forms, the way the UK's Global Talent Visa does. Stage direction, film and television directing, and mise en scene all sit within scope. What the prefecture assesses is whether you carry on a real professional activity as a director and whether you meet the income structure the card requires. The permit is issued for up to four years and allows work without a separate authorisation.
Directors work both ways. A director engaged by a theatre, company or production is typically salaried; a director who develops and invoices projects across commissions works on an independent basis. The model you present depends on how your directing work is contracted and paid.
The income thresholds you must meet
- Overall resources of at least 70% of the gross annual SMIC.
- At least 51% of your counted income must come from your directing activity.
- For a salaried engagement, a contract averaging at least 1,236.84 EUR gross per month over a minimum of three months.
The 51% rule catches two common director situations. The first is the director who earns most of their income producing, managing productions or in unrelated administration; production and admin fees are not directing income for this test. The second is the emerging director who self-funds shorts or fringe stage work with little or no paid engagement. Passion projects are valuable, but they do not count toward the threshold unless they generate qualifying income. Salaried vs independent: which model fits a director
Salaried suits directors engaged by a theatre, a company, a production house or a broadcaster, where the engagement contract and pay slips evidence the 1,236.84 EUR monthly average over three months. Independent suits directors who contract project by project, invoicing commissioning theatres, producers or festivals, and who show the 70% and 51% structure through those invoices and agreements. Many directors alternate between the two, and the file is built around whichever model the last twelve months genuinely support.
Evidence that counts
- Engagements and contracts: directing contracts, commissioning and co-production agreements, festival and broadcast deals, with dates, titles and fees.
- Income proof: pay slips or invoices, and where relevant rights payments, showing the 70% and 51% structure over the reference period.
- Professional recognition: directing credits, programmes, festival selections and awards, reviews, notable venues and productions.
- Continuity: a sequence of directed works showing an ongoing professional practice.
Selections and reviews support a file, but the income and contract evidence is what decides it. A distinguished credit list with little qualifying income in the reference period will not carry the case on its own.
If you do not yet meet the thresholds
The honest position: if producing, teaching directing or unrelated work is the bulk of your income, or your directing has so far been self-funded without paid engagements, the card is not open to you yet, and no amount of framing changes the income structure. The realistic path is to convert your directing into paid, contracted work, whether salaried engagements or commissioned projects, until it is the majority of your income across the reference period, then apply.
